Jane Schmidt is the founder of Jane Schmidt Attorney PLLC, a Louisville law firm focused on estate planning, elder law, probate, asset protection, guardianship, special needs planning, and business formation. Licensed since 1990, Jane provides personalized legal guidance to individuals, families, older adults, caregivers, and business owners throughout the Louisville area.

Jane works directly with each client throughout the legal process. Rather than passing clients to staff members, she takes the time to understand their families, finances, concerns, and long-term goals. Clients receive Jane’s cell phone number so they can communicate with her when questions or concerns arise.

Her decision to focus on estate planning and elder law was influenced by her experience as a Stephen Minister through her church. That experience strengthened her desire to practice in an area of law where she could support people facing emotionally difficult circumstances, including aging, incapacity, the loss of a family member, and uncertainty about the future.

During her career, Jane has prepared approximately 500 estate plans, established approximately 500 trusts, handled approximately 300 probate matters, and assisted with the formation of approximately 100 business entities. Her work includes matters involving revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney, living wills, health care directives, special needs trusts, Medicaid planning, guardianship, probate administration, asset protection, and limited liability companies.

Jane also assists business owners who need their estate and business plans to work together. This may involve forming an LLC, placing ownership interests into a revocable living trust, developing succession arrangements, or considering key-person insurance when a business has non-family partners.

Her representative experience includes creating an irrevocable trust to preserve a multigenerational family farm, developing an estate plan for a couple with approximately $15 million in assets, administering a $2.5 million estate through probate, and helping rental-property owners organize their properties into separate LLCs for liability protection. Jane earned her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1990. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the College of William & Mary. She is licensed in Georgia and Kentucky and is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, WealthCounsel, the Kentucky Bar Association, and the Louisville Bar Association.
